Celebrating the euro: The winning Eurocompetition posters

“Fresh, young and original” is how the jury described the work of Slovakian Viktória Š., the winner of the Eurocompetition, a poster competition to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the euro. Over 1800 participants entered the competition, which required them to use their creativity to design a poster on the benefits and the future of the common currency.

Schoolchildren aged between 10 and 14 from the euro area countries were invited to participate in the Eurocompetition, which was organised by the European Commission. Out of the 1892 entries received by the closing date of 31 December 2008, a group of teachers from across the euro area made a pre-selection of three posters per country. The final jury then selected 15 national winners and one overall winner.

The posters cover a multitude of ideas and are full of creativity. The winning entry, “Moderné Euro”, created by Viktória Š., depicts a young woman wearing a party dress made of euro coins and notes. As the young artist points out:

“The euro is for all generations and all occasions. This is a dress to celebrate the euro with young people.”

Because of the high quality of their submissions, the jury decided to give a special mention to two finalists: Frederieke M. from the Netherlands with her poster “Euro swims on” and Georgina G. from Spain with her “union-estabilidad-fuerza”.

The national winners will receive a digital camera. The overall winner will be invited to Brussels where her poster will be presented at a press event in the presence of Mr Joaquín Almunia, the European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs.
